On the afternoon of April 13, as SJTU was celebrating its 117th anniversary and Chemistry Department was celebrating its 85th anniversary, the statue of Xu Mingcai, the 1st Dean of Chemistry Department, was unveiled in the School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering (SCCE) on Minhang Campus. Present were President of SJTU North America Alumni Association Ma Kaigui, President of SJTU Zhangjie, Vice President of SJTU Wu Dan, Academician of CAS Yan Deyue, SCCE Sub-party Secretary Lin Jiangnan, Executive Deputy Dean Chen Jiesheng, Deputy Director of Civilization Office Wang Linyuan, Deputy Director of Development and Liaison Office Yang Shengrong, General Manager of Shanghai Yinrui Business Consulting Co., Ltd Ji Zhengdong, 1993,1996,1999,2001,2003 alumnus representatives and teacher and student representatives.

In warm applause, Zhang jie, Ma Kaigui, Ji Zhengdong and Dilraba unveiled the Statue for Xu Mingcai together.

Xu Mingcai is a renowned Chemical Engineering expert and educator in China. After graduated from Nan Yang Public School, the predecessor of SJTU, he went to MIT for further education. After graduation, he returned home from study abroad and served as a Chemistry professor in SJTU in 1922. Chemistry Department was founded in 1928 and he was elected the first dean of it. In August 1940, under tragic circumstances, he assumed the responsibility abruptly as Director of Jiao Tong University at Chongqing during the Anti-Japanese War and Westward Movement. He advocated the educational philosophy "study advanced knowledge and cultivating talented students". During critical difficult times, with indomitable and unyielding spirit, he has made outstanding contribution to carrying forward the time-honored and fine tradition of SJTU.
