From November 15 to 17, 2024, the 4th International Symposium on Natural Product Synthesis and Process Methods for Drug Manufacturing was successfully held in Shanghai. The symposium was co-chaired by Prof. Kuiling DING, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and Prof. Yongqiang TU, academician of CAS.
Participants included Cheng ZHOU, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of SJTU; Qilin ZHOU, academician of CAS and Professor at Nankai University; Dawei MA, academician of CAS and Professor at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry; Chunhai FAN, academician of CAS and Dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE) at SJTU; Frank Glorius, Professor at the University of Münster; Robert Knowles, Professor at Princeton University; Chunfeng CHEN, Deputy President of the Singapore National Academy of Science and Professor at Nanyang Technological University; Li DENG, Vice President of Westlake University; and Yingqiang WU, Secretary of the Party Committee of SCCE at SJTU.
In total, over 130 renowned experts and scholars, along with over 300 students and faculty representatives from more than 50 universities and research institutes across six countries and regions, attended the symposium. The symposium was hosted by Wanbin ZHANG, Chair Professor at SCCE, and Secretary-General of the symposium.
The symposium, themed "Innovative Natural Product Synthesis: Shaping the Future of Smart Drug Manufacturing," invited esteemed experts and outstanding scholars from China and abroad in the fields of natural product synthesis, advanced drug manufacturing, and related disciplines. Participants engaged in discussions on significant scientific challenges and key technological issues, focusing on cutting-edge topics such as natural product synthesis, novel chemical reactions, and advanced process methods for drug manufacturing. The event served as a platform for exchanging ideas, fostering innovation, and exploring future developments in the field.
Opening Ceremony
On the morning of Nov 16th, Cheng ZHOU delivered a welcome address at the Opening Ceremony. On behalf of SJTU, he extended a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to all attendees. ZHOU introduced the university's history, and the achievements of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and the Frontiers Science Center for Transformative Molecules. He highlighted that the symposium aims to promote the dissemination of new knowledge, the sharing of advanced technologies, the establishment of stronger collaborative relationships, and the expansion of cooperative fields. These efforts are expected to enhance innovation capabilities and improve the industrial system in the pharmaceutical sector. Looking to the future, the university will adopt more innovative strategies and pragmatic measures to strengthen collaboration and exchanges with domestic and international universities and research institutions. He reaffirmed the university's commitment to cultivating top-tier talent and generating pioneering scientific achievements.
The symposium featured exceptional keynote presentations delivered by Prof. Qilin ZHOU, Prof. Dawei MA, Prof. Frank Glorius, Prof. Robert Knowles, Prof. Chunfeng CHEN, and Prof. Li DENG. These sessions were chaired by Prof. Kuiling DING, Prof. Yongqiang TU, and Prof. Wanbin ZHANG, respectively. In total, the symposium included over 100 academic presentations and 50 poster sessions. Experts engaged in in-depth discussions on the latest research findings and future development trends in the fields of natural product synthesis, advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing, green synthesis methods and technologies, asymmetric catalysis, and synthetic methodologies. The outstanding presentations stimulated lively and thought-provoking discussions among scholars, faculty, and students from around the globe.
Closing Ceremony
On the afternoon of Nov 17th, the Closing Ceremony of the symposium was successfully held. Prof. Kuiling DING extended his congratulations on the successful conclusion of the event. He highlighted the pivotal role of synthetic chemistry in advancing human history and improving quality of life, emphasizing that synthesis not only shapes the future but also creates value, and has the power to influence and transform the world. DING noted that the symposium showcased groundbreaking advancements and innovative achievements in the fields of natural product synthesis and advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing while also sparking a wealth of new ideas, methods, and pathways. These innovations are expected to inspire new models and provide fresh directions for the future development of the field. He expressed his hope for continued collaboration with all participants to further contribute to the progress and prosperity of human society.
Prof. Kuiling DING, Prof. Yongqiang TU, Prof. Qilin ZHOU, and Mr. Zhien PENG, Chairman of Oray Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., presented awards to the 20 winners of the Outstanding Poster Awards.
Prof. Jing XU from Southern University of Science and Technology, representing the host institution for the next International Symposium on Natural Product Synthesis and Process Methods for Drug Manufacturing, provided an overview of the 2026 event, and warmly invited all attendees to reconvene in Guangdong.
The 4th International Symposium on Natural Product Synthesis and Process Methods for Drug Manufacturing was hosted by SJTU and jointly organized by the university's School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the Frontiers Science Center for Transformative Molecules, the Zhengzhou Research Institute of SJTU, and the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Chiral Drugs Molecular Engineering. The symposium received substantial support from over ten companies, including Aurisco Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.
Since its inception in Chongqing, China, in 2012, the symposium has been held in Nanjing in 2014 and Beijing in 2016. Over the years, it has grown into a significant international event in natural product synthesis and advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing. The symposium aims to provide a platform for scholars to exchange innovative ideas, explore new methods and processes in drug manufacturing, and drive the pharmaceutical industry’s continuous advancement to new heights.
