In January 2020, Ministry of Education issued Notice on the 2019 Construction of Frontiers Science Centers (Jiaojihan [2019] 83). The construction of SJTU Frontiers Science Center for Transformative Molecules (FSCTM) was approved.

FSCTM will focus on the frontiers of molecular science and national strategic needs. Through establishing a world-class research institute, the center intends to gather high-level talents and make significant innovations in molecular science, providing new engines for the breakthrough of revolutionary technologies.

The center contains three major research fields: micromolecules, macromolecules and supramolecules. It is expected to make breakthroughs in fundamental concepts and research modes and make original achievements in the fields such as the design of drug molecules, synthesis of biomacromolecules and the assembly and functional discoveries of cell robots.
