Prof. Peter J. Stang, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, attended the 138th Master Distinguished Lecture
Date: 2019-11-14

On Oct 30th, 2019, Prof. Peter J. Stang, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Editor-in-Chief of JACS, attended the 138th Master Distinguished Lecture and delivered a lecture titled Abiological Self- Assembly: Predesigned Metallacycles and metallacages via Coorination.

Prof. Stang shared the inspiration he obtained from multicomponent self-assembly of Cerevisiae protease and put forward an idea of abiological self- assembly. Then he stated that his research group has self-assembled a variety of 2D supramolecular polygons as well as a number of 3D supramolecular polyhedra via the coordination motif. More recently, the research group has functionalized these rigid supramolecular scaffolds with different properties through introducing functional groups.

Prof. Stang further summarized that by exploring the self-assembly of 2D polygons and 3D polyhedra on a variety of surfaces could we develop supramolecular devices and supramolecular materials with specific functions that may be applied to biomedical imaging.

Prof. Stang used vivid examples to illustrate his scientific ideas and methods, explained how to self-assemble discrete supermolecule with good geometry and spatial arrangement, and prospected the application potential of assembled supramolecular compounds, which expanded students’ knowledge of frontier chemistry.

In the interactive session, Prof. Stang and faculties and students of SJTU had a lively discussion on related scientific issues.

After the lecture, Prof. Stang visited Minhang campus and was deeply impressed by the beautiful scenery of SJTU. He also had in-depth exchanges with faculties and graduate students of SCCE, listened to reports given by researchers in related fields and offered the valuable suggestions.

Guest profile

After postdoctoral work at Princeton University, he joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 1969 where, since 1992, he held the rank of Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. He served as Department Chair from 1989 to 1995 and as Dean of the College of Science at Utah from 1997 to 2007. After serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC) from 2000 to 2001, Professor Stang has been the Editor of JACS since 2002.

Prof. Stang is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
