Testing Center

The Testing Center of SCCE was established in 1997. It is a public experimental platform invested in and constructed under Project 211 and Project 985. The center has achieved a certain scale, with a total area of 900 square meters and an investment in equipment of over RMB40 million. It possesses more than 50 advanced precision instruments, mainly serving disciplines such as chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, nanotechnology, environment, biology, agriculture, medicine, etc. The center has become an important support platform for scientific research at SJTU and one of the key bases for modern analysis.

The testing instruments in the center include spectrometers (infrared, ultraviolet, fluorescence, steady-state and transient fluorescence), chromatographs (GPC, HPLC), thermal analyzers (DSC, TGA, DMA), microscopes (polarizing, fluorescence, SEM, TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometers, X-ray diffractometers, single-crystal X-ray diffractometers, rheometers (capillary, rotational, torque), nanoparticle size analyzers, mechanical property testers, physical property testers, etc. Additionally, the center is equipped with polymeric materials processing and sample-preparing equipment, such as twin-screw extruders, injection molding machines, plastic spline molds, open mills, and internal mixers, which cater to the research field of polymeric materials.

The center’s main task is sample testing, analysis, and characterization, providing testing data and spectral analysis. The key directions include chemical structure detection of organic substances, determination of polymeric molecular weight, thermal analysis of materials, rheological performance testing and materials analysis, microscopic analysis, particle and pore size analysis, mechanical property testing, and plastic test spline molding. The center has expertise in the characterization of polymeric properties and composition analysis of rubber and plastic products.

The center undertakes testing and analysis in most scientific research projects and academic papers of SCCE. It plays a prominent role in structural analysis and property characterization, significantly contributing to high-level research projects and publications. The center has 11 full-time staff members, most of whom hold senior technical titles and have master’s degrees or above. They possess solid knowledge and rich work experience. It is a dedicated and cohesive team actively serving teaching and research with a reasonable age structure. Relying on the solid faculty and technical strength of SCCE, the center has hired 9 professors as part-time technical advisors. They participate in developing instrument functions, maintaining a high level of sample preparation techniques, testing techniques, and spectrum analysis capabilities, and ensuring the reliability and validity of testing and the accuracy of the analysis.

The center adopts a shared and open management approach to large-scale precision instruments, efficiently leveraging the role of equipment in serving scientific research and teaching. The center provides a testing and analysis platform for faculty and students within SJTU and technical services, including testing, analysis, and sample preparation for external enterprises and institutions.
