Polymer Science and Engineering

The discipline of Polymeric Materials of SJTU was established in the 1970s. In 1981, the department was allowed to grant master’s degrees in Polymeric Materials, and in 1992 it was allowed to grant doctor’s degrees in Polymeric Materials. We also have a post-doctoral mobile station for Materials Science and Engineering. Among the majors, Functional Polymer Material is one of the first key disciplines supported by Project 211.

Polymeric Materials mainly studies structure and properties, design and modification, synthesis and characterization, and processing and applications of polymeric materials. Based on theories such as the relationship between the structure and properties of polymer structure, reaction mechanisms and rheology, students in this major should master modern analytical techniques and explore the impacts of the polymerization technology, processing equipment, processing technology and various environmental factors on the structure and performance of materials. By optimizing the existing products and processing methods through new technologies and introducing computer technology to polymeric materials science and technology, we strive to improve the quality, bring out the potential of polymeric materials, and develop new materials and applications to meet the needs of national economic development.

We have several modern precision analysis instruments, such as the thermal analyzer (DSC, TGA, DMA), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gel permeation chromatography, scanning electron microscope, infrared spectrophotometer, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, fluorescence spectrophotometer, capillary rheometer, universal tensile machine, hot stage polarized microscopy, torque rheometer, polymer composite sample performance tester, gas chromatograph, twin screw extruder, single screw extruder. We also have various plastic and rubber processing equipment.

Structure, performance and processing of polymer materials

The effects of the composition, structure and processing of polymer materials on their performance, physical and chemical modification of polymeric materials, polymeric reaction processing, computer-aided engineering in polymer processing (CAE), multiple sets of multiphase material composite polymeric materials, abrasion-resistant composite material with high coefficient of friction, rubber and thermoplastic elastomer, insulating polymeric material, and polymer alloy with high performance.

Functional polymeric materials (polymeric materials with electrical, magnetic, and optical activity)

Polymer electrolytes, electromagnetic wave stealth materials, molecular memory storage materials, organic polymer luminescent materials, nonlinear optical material (NLOM), and polymer electret, polymeric additives.

Polymeric materials with high performance

Novel polyether sulfone and polyimide polymeric materials with good thermal stability, self-reinforced thermal tropic liquid crystal molecules polymers, and condensation-type multi-block polymers.
